The Cinema has reached it's fundraising goal of $90,000 and would like to give a big thank you to all who participated and donated towards the cause. Most of our films will now show in high quality digital projection and sound with our new equipment.

Waiheke  Cinema has now gone digital with the installation last week of a new Digital Cinema Projector.

Cinema Co-ordinator Lynne Stewart explains “The installation has happened a bit earlier than expected due to the availability of the technicians who are very busy installing the equipment around the country”.

“It’s been almost a year since we made the decision to go digital and launched the fundraising campaign.  Thanks to John Hawkesby, who agreed to front the campaign, and the generosity of the wider community, we have almost reached our target of $90,000 (currently at $80,000), and are confident that we will raise the balance of the funds.  I believe the support we have received from the community reflects the affection Waihekeans have for their cinema”.

Programmes Manager, Matthias Kroeger, says that cinema patrons will enjoy a better picture and sound quality with the new equipment. The projector has industry standard 2k resolution and is powered by a two kilowatt Xenon lamp. The file size of a feature can go up to 250 Gigabytes and more, like Django Unchained, one our current films. Waiting time for new releases will be much less than before.

“Very few film prints are now produced as the world goes digital and if we hadn’t made the commitment to this we would have difficulty accessing films in the future”.

As a thank you to the Waiheke community there will be some free screenings this coming weekend.  Check the cinema programme for details, bookings are recommended.
